2005 Suzuki Forenza

Many times a sequel doesn’t work, because it’s often just a watered-down version of the original. That’s not the case with the Suzuki Forenza. The first version, a compact sedan was launched last year and was popular enough to make the manufacturer do it again, but this time with a wagon. The result is a Forenza that will give its competitors in the compact wagon segment cause for concern.

Suzuki hopes to attract buyers with its appealing body style, sedan-like handling, long list of features and affordable price. Fortunately for Suzuki and other auto manufacturers, buyers are finding wagons more appealing. Once a common fixture in suburban driveways, station wagons became less than popular for many years.

However, consumers are fickle and their preferences change as quickly as hairstyles. Stiletto heels, crotched ponchos and station wagons are back in vogue.

The Forenza wagon is available in three models: the S, LX and EX, with manufacture’s suggested retail prices that range from $14,000 to $18,000. The combination of numerous standard features, quality construction and a great warranty results in value. In today’s economy, that’s important to consumers.

So, what do you get for your hard-earned dollars? Each model has a long list of standard features, including built-in roof rails, intermittent wipers, air conditioning with micron air-filtration system, speed-sensitive steering, 12-volt power outlet, tilt wheel, height-adjustable driver seat, adjustable lumbar supports on both front seats and a suitable audio system.

The Forenza also has a noise-insulated cabin, which I tested by driving over pothole-infested streets. The interior was comfortable and good-looking, with metallic accents on the doors and instrument panel to give it an upscale look.

However, the warranty caps the deal. In addition to the new-vehicle limited warranty, all Suzuki vehicles have a no-deductible, 100,000-mile/seven-year powertrain warranty that’s transferable to subsequent owners. There’s also a three-year roadside assistance program that includes a free courtesy car for up to five days while the Forenza is out of service.

Features and warranties are great, but how does the vehicle perform? Although it’s no power demon, the Forenza is comfortable to drive on the highway and in the city, where it’s easy to maneuver through tight streets and parallel park.

Under the Forenza wagon’s hood is a 2.0-liter, dual-overhead cam, inline four-cylinder engine with a maximum output of 126 horsepower and 131 pounds-feet of torque.

The EX model I drove for the week was somewhat kind to my checkbook because of its average gas mileage of 27 mpg in combined city/highway driving. However, I’m a conservative driver, and I didn’t deliver any rambunctious soccer players to a game every night, so those figures will fluctuate with each person’s driving style and usage.

What won’t change is the amount of cargo space these wagons have, which is why most people buy them. Whether you’re packing the storage space with sports equipment, camping gear, garden materials, or boxes during a move, you’ll have plenty of space. When the 60/40 split rear seats are folded forward, that space increases dramatically, but passengers have to stay home.

The Forenza looks good, is comfortable to drive and has plenty of interior space for carrying cargo and people. If you’re looking for a sports car that burns up the road, you’ll have to go somewhere else to satisfy your passion for speed.

On the other hand, if you want a vehicle that’s economical to buy and fun to drive, give the Forenza wagon a try.
